Eloïse Descleves

  • These photographs were captured during my inaugural journey to China in April 2018. Embarking on a remarkable adventure from Beijing to Shanghai, with captivating stops in Xi'An, Guangxi, Yangshuo, and Zhujiajiao. I was instantly struck by the juxtaposition of familiar landscapes reminiscent of Vietnam, my mother's homeland, alongside the distinct aromas and spirited souls of the Chinese people.

Through my lens, I endeavored to immortalize stolen moments of poetic beauty woven into the tapestry of everyday life. From tired farmers finding solace on their journey home after a long day in the rice fields, to elderly individuals gracefully dancing in the park, and market vendors taking respite to engage in spirited card games. Each photograph encapsulates a glimpse of the human experience that resonated deeply with me. These images serve as a testament to the enchanting parallels and unique disparities between cultures, inviting viewers to immerse themselves in the profound beauty and universal emotions that transcend geographical boundaries.

Each frame encapsulates a story, an emotion, and an undeniable connection to the vibrant spirit of China. As these photographs were taken about a year before the country closed its borders because of COVID, they now serve as an emotional testament to what life was like in China before the pandemic, and as a hopeful glimpse into what life could look like as it gradually returns to a sense of normalcy. In a world forever changed by the global health crisis, these images become even more poignant, capturing the essence of a time when bustling streets, lively markets, and communal gatherings were an everyday occurrence.
